The risks attached to a workforce are not only financial. Personal and work-related pressures affect wellbeing, attendance and capacity, and employers increasingly carry obligations to manage psychosocial risk alongside physical safety. An Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) is one of the practical responses to that, and it is a support service rather than an insurance promise.
An EAP typically gives employees, and often their immediate family, confidential access to counselling and support, together with resources for managers and the organisation. What is included, and how it is delivered, depends on the provider. An EAP is one part of a people-risk programme, and it works best when it connects to the rest of it, including return-to-work support and the employer’s broader wellbeing and safety obligations.
DKG is an advisory-led general insurance broker with specialist Life and People Risk capability. We help you understand where an EAP fits within a people-risk programme, how it connects to workers compensation, injury management and corporate health, and what a provider arrangement does and does not do. We do not provide clinical or medical advice, and an EAP is a support service, not a treatment or an insurance guarantee.
What are the benefits?
- Confidential access to counselling and support for employees facing personal or work-related challenges.
- Support that often extends to an employee’s immediate family, depending on the provider.
- Resources for managers and the organisation, designed to help them respond to wellbeing and psychosocial issues.
- A practical element of a workforce wellbeing strategy and of an employer’s approach to psychosocial-risk obligations.
- A service that can connect to the rest of a people-risk programme, including injury management and return to work.
- An adviser who helps position the EAP within the wider programme rather than as a standalone purchase.
What can it cover?
An EAP is a service arrangement, and what it includes is set by the provider’s service terms rather than a policy wording. In general terms, and subject to those terms, an EAP can be designed to provide:
- Confidential counselling and support sessions for employees, commonly delivered by phone, online or in person.
- Access for an employee’s immediate family, depending on the provider.
- Manager assistance and organisational support resources.
- Wellbeing content and referral pathways to further support where appropriate.
The scope, the number of sessions and the delivery model vary by provider. We help you understand the options and how they fit the rest of the programme.
What usually isn’t covered?
An EAP is a confidential support service, not a clinical treatment service or an insurance policy. In general terms, and subject to the provider’s service terms, the following usually sit outside an EAP:
- Clinical or medical treatment beyond the scope of the support service.
- Long-term or specialist therapy beyond the sessions the service provides.
- Any guaranteed health, wellbeing or attendance outcome.
- Matters that the provider’s service terms place outside the arrangement.
What an EAP includes is set by the provider’s service terms. We make no clinical or health-outcome representations, because an EAP is a support service rather than a promise of a result.
How DKG supports you
We start with the role an EAP plays in your wider people-risk programme. We help you understand how it connects to workers compensation, injury management and corporate health, what a provider arrangement covers, and how to position it so your people understand it is confidential and available. Where DKG arranges rather than refers the service, we coordinate that with you.
Because an EAP is a service rather than an insurance policy, the usual claims-advocacy role does not apply in the same way. Where an EAP connects to a workplace injury or a workers compensation matter, we help coordinate it with the rest of the programme, including return-to-work planning. We make no clinical or health-outcome guarantees.
