Trauma Insurance

A serious illness can carry a financial cost well beyond medical treatment. Time away from work, the cost of recovery, changes at home and the pressure on a business that depends on the person can all arrive at once, and life, total and permanent disability and income protection cover do not always answer that gap in full. Trauma insurance is designed to meet it with a lump sum paid on diagnosis of a listed condition that meets the policy definition.

The covered conditions and the way each is defined vary by insurer, and definitions often turn on severity. For that reason we describe trauma cover as responding to specified conditions, subject to policy wording, and we do not publish a definitive condition list or suggest that any diagnosis is automatically covered. What a policy responds to is set out in its wording, and we work through that with you before any cover is placed.

DKG is an advisory-led general insurance broker with specialist Life and People Risk capability. We advise before we place. We help you understand how trauma cover sits within a personal-risk programme that may also include life, total and permanent disability and income protection cover, and we set honest expectations about underwriting and definitions before cover is placed. Cover is shaped by disclosure, health and insurer appetite, and is always subject to policy wording.

What are the benefits?

  • A lump sum designed to be available on diagnosis of a specified serious condition that meets the policy definition.
  • Funds that can help meet treatment and recovery costs that other cover may not reach.
  • Funds that can help reduce debt or fund time away from work during recovery.
  • Support for business continuity where the insured person is central to the business, designed around the exposure.
  • Cover that can sit alongside life, total and permanent disability and income protection cover, so the personal-risk programme answers more than one event.
  • An adviser who explains how the conditions and definitions work and acts as your advocate if a claim is made.

What can it cover?

Trauma cover responds to specified conditions set out in the policy. In general terms, and subject to underwriting, terms, conditions, exclusions and policy wording, cover can be designed to provide:

  • A lump sum on diagnosis of a listed condition that meets the policy’s definition, including its severity requirements.
  • A benefit that can help meet treatment costs, reduce debt, fund recovery time and support business continuity.
  • Cover structured to work alongside life, total and permanent disability and income protection cover within a personal-risk programme.

The conditions covered, the definitions and any severity thresholds are set by the insurer and the policy wording. We work through what a policy does and does not respond to with you before any cover is placed, rather than implying that a particular diagnosis is covered.

What usually isn’t covered?

Cover responds to the listed conditions and the definitions the policy is written to answer. In general terms, and subject to policy wording, the following are usually not covered:

  • Conditions that are not listed in the policy or that do not meet the policy’s severity definition.
  • Diagnoses made within an initial qualifying period set by the policy.
  • Undisclosed pre-existing conditions.
  • Events that fall outside the policy definitions.

What a policy covers and excludes is determined by the insurer and the policy wording. The condition definitions and the disclosure made at application both shape how a policy responds, and we explain that before cover is placed.

How DKG supports you

We start with the gap a serious illness can create and how it sits against your existing cover, then help you understand how trauma cover is defined and where it fits within a wider personal-risk programme. We take care with the covered-condition lists and definitions, because they vary by insurer and turn on severity, and we do not represent that any diagnosis is automatically covered. We do not provide personal financial, legal or tax advice on these life-risk lines, and we refer those questions to the appropriate adviser.

When a claim is made, trauma claims turn on the policy’s condition definitions and the medical evidence. We act as your advocate from notification through to resolution. We help prepare and present the claim, work through the definitions and evidence and manage insurer engagement. The insurer and the policy wording determine the outcome, and we make no representation as to claim results.

Trauma insurance responds to a specific gap: the cost of a serious illness you survive. What's critical is precision on definitions. The conditions listed, how they're defined, the severity thresholds, all of that changes by insurer. We work through exactly what a policy does and doesn't respond to before cover is placed. That's where the protection lives, not in assumptions about what's covered.
