Most businesses with a mobile workforce carry two related exposures. The first is travel. When staff, executives or directors travel for work, a medical event, an accident or a serious disruption away from base can become the employer’s problem to manage. The second is accident. Some roles carry an occupational accident risk whether or not travel is involved, and a serious injury affects the individual, their family and the business that depends on them.
Business travel and personal accident cover is designed to answer the financial and assistance side of those exposures. It can bring together emergency medical cover and assistance, evacuation, travel disruption and personal accident benefits in one arrangement, structured around where your people go and what they do. For employers with international assignments or high-risk destinations, the programme can extend to specialist considerations described below.
DKG is an advisory-led general insurance broker with specialist Life and People Risk capability. We advise before we place. We review how, where and how often your people travel, identify the accident exposure in the roles that carry it, and structure cover that supports your duty of care to a mobile workforce. Cover is always subject to underwriting, terms, conditions, exclusions and policy wording.
What are the benefits?
- Cover designed to support employees who experience a medical event or accident while travelling for work, including emergency assistance and, where needed, evacuation.
- A response to travel disruption, so a cancelled, curtailed or interrupted trip is not left entirely with the business or the traveller.
- Personal accident benefits that can provide a lump sum or weekly benefit for accidental injury, designed around the roles that carry that risk.
- Cover that supports an employer’s duty of care to staff, executives and directors who travel or work in higher-risk settings.
- A programme that can extend to specialist considerations for international assignments and high-risk destinations.
- An adviser who reviews the cover as your travel footprint changes and acts as your advocate if a claim is made.
What can it cover?
Business travel and personal accident programmes can bring several components together. In general terms, and subject to underwriting, terms, conditions, exclusions and policy wording, cover can be designed to provide:
Business travel
- Emergency medical expenses and assistance for employees while travelling for work.
- Evacuation and repatriation where it is needed and the policy responds.
- Travel disruption cover for cancelled, curtailed or interrupted trips.
Personal accident
- A lump sum or weekly benefit for accidental injury to an employee, while travelling or at work, depending on the wording.
- Cover structured around the roles and activities that carry the accident exposure.
Kidnap and ransom: a specialist extension
- For businesses with international assignments or exposure to high-risk destinations, kidnap and ransom is a specialist extension that can be considered as part of the wider travel and people-risk programme. It is a sensitive and confidential area, and we describe it only in general terms. We discuss whether it is relevant to your travel footprint privately, with the appropriate discretion, rather than setting out detail here.
The right combination depends on where your people travel, how often, and the roles they hold. We work through those questions with you before any cover is placed.
What usually isn’t covered?
Cover responds to the policy definitions and the events the policy is written to answer. In general terms, and subject to policy wording, the following are usually not covered:
- Travel to, or incidents in, regions that are excluded or travelled to against official advice.
- Pre-existing medical conditions, depending on the wording.
- Ordinary commuting, depending on how the policy is written.
- Territories excluded by sanctions or by the policy.
- Events that fall outside the policy definitions.
What a policy covers and excludes is determined by the insurer and the policy wording. Destination, the reason for travel and disclosure all shape how a policy responds, and we set those expectations before cover is placed.
How DKG supports you
We start with your travel footprint and your duty of care, not a product. We review where your people go, how often and in what roles, identify the accident exposure that sits in the business, and structure cover that supports your obligations to a mobile workforce. Where international assignments or high-risk destinations are involved, we discuss specialist considerations with the appropriate discretion. This page links to Expatriate and Inpatriate Medical Insurance for employers with a more established overseas footprint.
When a claim is made, travel and accident claims can move quickly and involve medical evidence, assistance providers and time pressure. We act as your advocate from notification through to resolution. We help prepare and present the claim, coordinate with assistance providers where relevant and manage insurer engagement. The insurer and the policy wording determine the outcome, and we make no representation as to claim results.
